Last night driving with Sam he asked me if Santa is real. He knows the answer's no--we've never gone the Santa route. (Ask if you want to know our reasons.) Anyway, tis the season for kids at school to talk about Santa, and I think Sam may end up spilling the beans. He asked why some kids think Santa's real, and then, working it through, asked about when their presents end up under their trees. (I wonder if these kids are using the nocturnal present appearance as evidence for Santa's existence?) He seems to find the whole thing curious.
Whole day with Sam and most of it with Susan; included a long trip to the library and the hardware store. Perfect.
A Douglas Fir is now up in the corner of the living room. Sam's very eager to decorate. Tomorrow!

Yes, the whole "blowing it for others" reason is why we let Santa exist. Emily was fundamentally incapable of keeping a secret. We never bothered to expound on him (no need--America did that for us) but we didn't bother to disprove him either. Time did that job for us. Perhaps we were just lazy...
Sue, it was thoughtful of you and Stu to protect other little kids. I get the impression it's a very meaningful myth for many. One person in our small group, Heidi, said they didn't do Santa with their kids, and one other mother actually got mad at her for denying her kids that endearing fantasy--as if Heidi were being abusive.
Did your parents do Santa? I can't remember either being told he didn't exist or ever thinking he was real. Maybe Stu or Amy would recall...
